OverviewSpaceX Starship is a fully reusable, large-scale spacecraft designed to enable human exploration and colonization of the moon, Mars, and beyond. The ship's design allows for a maximum payload capacity of 300 tons to LEO.The ship's propulsion system consists of 37 Raptor engines, including one central engine and 36 smaller engines grouped around it. Each Raptor engine produces an average of 445,000 pounds of thrust and can be throttled up or down based on the mission requirements. The ship also features six methane-based thrusters used for attitude control and maneuvering.Starship's design allows for full reusability, meaning that the entire spacecraft, including the propellant, can be used again and again without being discarded. This is achieved through a combination of a sturdy and lightweight hull design, a propulsion system that can be refueled in orbit, and an advanced heat shield that can withstand the intense reentry heating.HistoryThe development of Starship began in 2016 as a collaboration between SpaceX and Bigelow Aerospace. The goal was to develop a spacecraft capable of carrying up to 100 tons to LEO and beyond. Development was accelerated in 2018 following the successful launch of Falcon Heavy, which provided SpaceX with the necessary experience and resources to tackle Starship's challenges.In September 2019, SpaceX successfully test-fired the first Starship engine at their South Texas Launch Site. By February 2020, the Starship's design was finalized with the announcement of its official name: Starship. In March 2021, SpaceX successfully launched Starship's first orbital flight test, called Starhopper, which achieved a short vertical takeoff and landing.Spaceflight PerformanceStarship's performance is expected to surpass that of any other spacecraft in its class. It is designed to carry over 100 tons to LEO, enabling it to transport larger payloads than any existing spacecraft. In addition, Starship's advanced propulsion system allows it to reach higher speeds and altitudes than previous designs, making it well-suited for deep-space exploration missions.Starship's design also includes an onboard refueling system that allows it to refuel in orbit, enabling multiple launches from a single launch pad.
